Tips for Managing Emotions

Managing feelings is an essential skill for children to develop as it helps them navigate through various emotions and cope with a variety of situations. At Muddy Boots, our teams work with children on an individual level through our key worker system, allowing them to really understand each child’s development needs.

In this blog, we’ll be sharing some of our top tips for helping children to manage their feelings effectively.

Identify and Label Emotions

The first step in managing feelings is to recognize and understand them. Its important to encourage children to identify and label their emotions, such as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, or frustration. This helps them gain awareness of their emotional state and communicate their feelings more effectively.

At Muddy Boots, we often use ‘The Colour Monster’ book and talk about feelings through pictures and games to help promote an awareness of feelings in a supportive and relaxed environment.

Encourage Open Communication

Create a safe and supportive environment where children feel comfortable expressing their emotions. Encourage open communication by actively listening to them without judgment or criticism. Doing this allows children to share their feelings and concerns, leading to better emotional management.

Something we do at nursery is create quiet spaces where children can spend time expressing, and even processing, their feelings. Having a similar space at home can really help with managing emotions.

Teach Coping Strategies

Help children develop healthy coping strategies to deal with challenging emotions. Teach them techniques like deep breathing exercises, counting to ten, or taking a break to calm down when feeling overwhelmed or angry. Encourage them to engage in activities they enjoy, such as drawing, writing, or playing sports, as a way to express and release their emotions.

At Muddy Boots, we use ‘The Colour Monster’ book and talk about our feelings at circle time. We also sing ‘If You’re Happy and You Know it’, sometimes changing the words to “if you’re sad and you know it” to normalise other feelings. This is something you could try at home!

Promote Empathy

Teaching children about empathy and the importance of understanding others' feelings is also a crucial step. Encourage them to put themselves in someone else's shoes and consider how their actions might impact others emotionally. This helps children develop emotional intelligence and fosters positive relationships with peers.

At nursery, we encourage children to connect with each other and practise their communication skills on a regular basis through group activities, circle time and more. This helps them develop a basic understanding of others and the world around them in a way they can understand.

Normalise Emotions

It’s also important to let children know that experiencing a wide range of emotions is normal and part of being human. Help them understand that it's okay to feel sad, angry, or frustrated at times. By normalising different emotions, children learn that it's not about suppressing or avoiding feelings but rather finding healthy ways to manage and express them.

Talking about emotions is a great way to be able to help children recognise that its ok to be sad or angry sometimes. At Muddy Boots, we speak to children about the different emotions and why we might feel that way, then discuss how we could change our feelings to be happy.


Managing emotions can be difficult at any age, but setting these foundations of healthy communication and understanding in young children is incredibly important.
