A recent survey by Kindred Squared (2026) shows that 37% children are not starting reception ‘school ready’. Teachers are losing over 2 hours of teaching time every day, due to children lacking the key skills they need before starting school.
The same survey found that 1 in 4 children starting reception in 2025 were not toilet trained leading to 26% of children having frequent toilet mishaps. This figure rose to 36% in the North East.
Children lacking key skills also extends beyond self-care, with 28% of children starting school unable to eat and drink independently.
