National Trust Locations: Yorkshire Coast

As the Summer holidays are fast approaching, our next National Trust location is based around the Yorkshire Coast! If you’re looking for some inspiration for fun activities and places to visit while the sun still shines, the Yorkshire Coast has it all, and you can visit for free with your gifted National Trust Family Membership - what’s not to love?

The National Trust has two visitor centres and cafes along the coast, both at Robin Hood’s Bay and Ravenscar, giving you two fantastic places to explore during the summer months. Not only do both locations offer fantastic views, they also have lots of different family-friendly activities that are perfect for any child at Muddy Boots!

Robin Hood’s Bay

At Robin Hood’s Bay, you can have a go at rock pooling and beachcombing, as the National Trust run hour long family sessions, teaching children (and parents) how to explore the beach safely and responsibly whilst you can find and investigate the different creatures, animals and species that live along the beach.

If you’re up for your own adventure, pick up a tracker pack from the coastguard station at the bay, “full of useful information on fossil hunting, bird watching and rock pooling” along with some game ideas to try out during your visit. You can borrow the tracker pack all day or just for a few hours; drop it off back at the centre when you’re done, and take your activity leaflet home to inspire some new adventures! You can also visit the exhibition room in the visitor centre where you can see some of the fossils and creatures you may find on display.

Ravenscar

At Ravenscar, explore the beach to your heart’s content, and look for more creatures and fossils, or take one of the cycle loops “with opportunities to stop and explore features of ‘the town that never was’ and remains of a WWII radar station”. There are a few cycle routes to follow, but the easy cycle loop is suitable for families whether you walk or cycle, as it follows quiet lanes, starting and finishing at Ravenscar Visitor Centre. During your travels, keep an eye out for birds, butterflies, wildflowers and even small mammals along the way!

Both locations have a café serving drinks, hot and cold snacks, cakes and even ice cream to eat in or take away. Whether you fancy a little treat, or forget to bring a picnic, you can find everything you need, and staff are happy to help. A selection of pre-loved books are also on sale in the centres as well!

If you take a trip to the beach this summer, and visit one of these fantastic locations, make sure to share what you get up to with us on Famly. We hope the weather holds out for you and you have a wonderful time exploring in the sun!
