Bump to Baby: First Time Childcare

When it comes to looking for childcare, we know how important it is to make the right decision for you and your family. But with so many nurseries to choose from, and lots of resources available, it can start to feel overwhelming.

Don’t know when to start looking? Not sure how many sessions you need? Got questions about funding? We’ve got you covered! Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about starting your childcare journey, as well as some top tips to help you get through this busy period.

When should I start looking for childcare?

It’s never too early to start looking at your options for childcare – some nurseries have waitlists, so it’s important to look in advance. Whether baby is due, or your circumstances have changed, nurseries and childcare providers are on hand to support you in any way they can. It’s also good to have back up options; while many providers will have some spaces, you may not be able to get your dream nursery right away.

What sessions are available to me?

Every child is unique, and so is every nursery! Some providers may have a minimum requirement of weekly sessions, some may offer the option of half-days. There’s no set rule to how many days your child should be at nursery; it’s important that you choose the right pattern for you and your family.

If you’re able to have extra support from family, you could start with 2-3 days a week. As your child gets more settled, you go back to work, and circumstances change, you will be able to increase your sessions (within nursery guidelines) to fit around your home schedule.

Can I get support to cover nursery fees?

Parents may be able to get government funded childcare to support or completely cover childcare costs. Here’s the current funding available in England:

  • 15 hours per week -  All families in England with children aged 3 and 4 are entitled to 15 hours of funded childcare per week, usually taken over 38 weeks of the year (570 hours)

  • 30 hours per week – From September 2025, eligible working parents can access 30 hours of funded childcare per week from the term after their child turns 9 months old up until they start school.

Funding starts the term after your child turns 9-months. These funded hours can be used with nurseries, childminders, and other approved childcare providers, and some settings allow the hours to be stretched over more weeks of the year

How can I apply for 15/30hr funding?

Parents can apply for funding online at GOV.UK.

You can apply for your funding code up to 16 weeks before your baby turns 9 months old. The deadline to apply is the day before the new term begins, but it is recommended to apply at least 6 weeks before the deadline to take up your entitlements in that term.

The deadlines are as follows:

What do I need to bring to nursery?

What to bring is often impacted by your chosen provider’s policies. Depending on their procedures, you may need to supply everyday items such as nappies, wipes, nappy bags and cream, as well as packed lunches. Some providers may include this in their fees, or offer it as a surcharge, so make sure to speak with your setting to understand their individual requirements. ‍

At Muddy Boots, we offer an ‘all-inclusive’ package, helping you to focus on your child’s journey and make this huge milestone that little bit easier. This includes:

  • Food, snacks & baby formula

  • Consumables (nappies, wipes, etc.)

  • Other activities/enhancements

We also give all our new-starters a Muddy Boots backpack as a welcome gift for you and your family, fit for bringing everything your child needs each day.
