Winter Adventures With the National Trust

As the weather gets colder and the nights feel longer, it’s often very common for people to spend less time outdoors. However, at Muddy Boots, we put a focus on spending time outside all year round, whatever the weather, making the necessary adjustments to enjoy our adventures no matter what. We want our families to continue to enjoy time outside as much as possible, which is why we’re sharing all the amazing places you can visit across Yorkshire with your free National Trust membership.

In this blog, we’re looking at some family-friendly activities run by different National Trust Locations during the Autumn and Winter months, to encourage you and your little ones to get outdoors! From woodland trails and orienteering, to craft workshops and activities, there’s so much to discover! Here’s a little taste of what’s on over the next couple of months.

Wildlings Hunt Family Trail

At Wentworth Castle Gardens, you can explore the Autumn woodland and discover the secrets of the woods through a trail inspired by myths, legends and folklore. Throughout the trail you will find characters from ancient tales, Wildlings that leave signs in nature behind them. The Wildlings trail runs throughout October and November. Pick up your free trail sheet from the visitor reception when you arrive, and journey into the heart of European folklore.

Orienteering

Also at Wentworth Castle are a selection of orienteering routes, perfect for all the family. With 4 permanent routes to choose from, and a mix of shorter or longer lengths, you can explore the gardens and parkland, and learn a new skill while you’re at it! The aim is to navigate your way along the route, choosing the best route to complete your course. No experience is required for this activity, and the orienteering team at Wentworth are on hand to explain what to do before you start your adventure. Simply purchase your orienteering map from the visitor reception, and make your way around the grounds at your own pace.

Winter Woodland Animal Trail

Explore the gardens at Beningbrough to find all the animals that have been invited to the woodland party! Dotted throughout the gardens are bird boxes with little woodland creatures hiding inside - can you spot them? The trail runs Friday to Sunday in November and December, but there’s plenty of opportunity to explore the trail, as it continues until the end of February. See what animals you can find, and join the woodland party.

Other National Trust Locations

While lots of National Trust sites are leading activities, workshops and more this winter, there are plenty of reasons to visit a site near you for the adventure alone! You can find out more about each of the fantastic locations mentioned above, and lots more across Yorkshire, by  visiting our blog.

There’s still so much to explore this Winter, whatever the weather. So get outdoors when you can, and create your own adventures with your little ones.
