National Trust Locations: Nostell

At Muddy Boots, we focus on outdoor learning, providing your children with as many outdoor adventures as possible! That’s why, when one of our families refer someone they know to Muddy Boots, they receive a free family membership to the National Trust as a thank you from us. As part of this referral perk, we’re sharing different National Trust Locations perfect for any child at Muddy Boots. In this blog, we’re taking a look at Nostell, a beautiful Georgian house with huge garden spaces and parkland.

Take a 40 minute drive out of Leeds, and you can discover the statement house at Nostell and wander through the gardens. Strolling through the ancient woodland, you’ll see meadows and lakes bursting with different wildlife. Or if you fancy a bike ride, why not cycle through the family-friendly 1km bike-only trail? Have a peek at the kitchen garden where you can investigate all its different edible delights, or take in the gothic architecture in the enchanting menagerie garden. Nostell is also equipped with a woodland play area where your little ones can make their own adventures. If you’re feeling particularly brave, you can even ride the 30-metre zip wire!

During October half term, Nostell are hosting their Cobwebs and Crawlies event (25th October - 2nd November), where you can journey across the grounds exploring the fascinating world of insects and mini beasts. There are two trails to explore; the interactive Garden Trail full of creepy crawly games and activities, and the House Trail where you can join in with some craft activities and uncover the history of some household insects at Nostell. You can also join in on some seasonal Apple Week activities, including an Apple Pressing workshop in the garden between 11:00 - 2:30 on 31st October.

Looking ahead to Christmas? Step into the world of Narnia at Nostell from 1st December to 5th January, where the story is brought to life. Explore the house room by room, following the story of Narnia, before entering the gingerbread village, reimagined with a Narnia twist. On weekends, the gingerbread village will lead you even further to the glass house where you can meet Father Christmas! Find out more on the National Trust website.

Wherever your adventure takes you, you can find a well earned rest and some tasty treats at the Courtyard Cafe. Choose something delicious from their seasonal menus, or have a light bite and drink from the cafe’s little outlet if you’re looking for something more ‘grab-and-go’ on a busy day. Finally, stop off at the shop in the corner of the Courtyard where you can find a selection of homeware and handcrafted items from local artists, as well as their second hand bookshop for a new story to share.

There’s so much to see, do and discover at Nostell, and it makes the perfect day out for all the family. If you decide to visit with your little ones, share what you get up to with us on Famly, we’d love to see it!
